Benchmark Construction, LancasterHistory James Buchanan’s, Wheatland Roof Replacement

In Lancaster, PA, the Homeplace and Estate of President James Buchanan still stands. His home, originally built in 1828, needed a significant roof replacement, but a building of this age and state required special care. Slate was imported from Vermont to match quality and size, specific materials like copper, lime, and cedar were sourced to align with the proper time period, and restoration of architectural details were of significant importance. The architect, Heritage Design Collaborative & William Cook Architecture and Planning were imperative to the project’s success. In 2020, the Preservation Pennsylvania awarded this project with a Special Focus Award in Preservation Planning
