Hurley Auctions sells several rare treasures

GREENCASTLE, PA — A private collection years in the making concluded at Hurley Auctions, ending a year long process to sell the estate of Chester Wayne Miller of Boonsboro, MD. The final auction, the fifth held for the estate, was an extensive civil war & military sale. The star of the auction undoubtedly was a c. 1801-1806 Johannes Spitler painted blanket chest, with stylized birds and flowers and original hand forged hinges. Bidders traveled from near and far to view this rare piece which closed at a final hammer price of $40,962.50 online. The new owner, Rod Graves of Luray, VA, intends to have the chest restored back to its original condition and displayed in the Luray Valley Museum. The museum, built to chronicle the history of the Virginia Shenandoah Valley, is located at Luray Caverns which hosts half a million visitors yearly.
